ADOPTING A PET

A few things you should ask yourself before you are ready to adopt a pet:

Do you have adequate space for your animal?

  • Large pets, like dogs, need space to run and/or need to be walked every day.
  • Indoor dogs should be crate trained and provided several toys to keep them busy.
  • Cats need a litter box and several toys as well.

Can you afford the cost?

  • Dogs and cats both require annual vaccinations as well as wormers and sometimes other health medications, including shampoo and powders.
  • As mentioned above, the animals require toys and bedding which need to be replace and/or cleaned regularly to prevent disease and pest infestation.
  • Some dogs require professional training through an obedience program however, all animals will benefit.

Do you have enough time to devote to your companion?

  • Cats & dogs, both large and small, are attention hogs. You must be able to devote a lot of time to them everyday.
  • When you leave for work or are on vacation, the animal must have a means to go to the restroom, especially if they are young.
Do I have enough patience to tolerate a young animal?
  • Chances are you will loose a couple of personal items to a puppy or kitten chewing things up.
