People are initiated into the Texas A&M University-Commerce chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society on the basis of achieving a 3.5 or above GPA during their freshman year, after they complete twelve to twenty-four hours at the university.

At the first Student Organization Awards Banquet, held on April 22, 2004, Phi Eta Sigma received the award for highest student organization grade point average in the honor societies category. Below is a picture of our president for 2003-2004, Maria Ranit, receiving the award from Joyce Scott, provost of the university.

Phi Eta Sigma is strictly an honor society. It emphasizes academic excellence and excellence in other areas. In addition to holding an initiation with a speaker every spring, it gives Awards for Continuing Academic Excellence every spring at the Honors Day Luncheon; these awards go to members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce chapter of Phi Eta Sigma who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above during their undergraduate careers at this university.

Members are also eligible to receive undergraduate and graduate scholarships that the national organization offers. The national organization awards more than $160,000 in scholarships each year. Any member interested in applying for one of these scholarships should contact the faculty adviser very early in the spring semester. In past years, we have been awarded several of these national scholarships, so our school is quite competitive. For details on the national awards go to www.phietasigma.org/scholarships.htm. Remember, to apply, contact the faculty adviser early in the spring semester.

We have honor cords and medallions for members to wear at graduation. The cost is $8 each. Members interested in obtaining these items should contact the faculty adviser.

The faculty adviser of the Texas A&M University-Commerce chapter of Phi Eta Sigma is Dr. Hunter Hayes. His email address is Hunter_Hayes@tamu-commerce.edu.

During the 2004-2005 academic year, Phi Eta Sigma took under its wing the Alpha Lambda Delta chapter at Texas A&M University-Commerce, in a successful attempt to revive that honor society and thus provide students with an opportunity to join Alpha Lambda Delta also. Membership requirements for Alpha Lamdba Delta are the same as those for Phi Eta Sigma: a GPA of 3.5 at the end of one semester of freshman work or at the end of the freshman year. At present, we are searching for a faculty adviser for Alpha Lambda Delta. Until we find one, we hope to continue sponsoring Alpha Lambda Delta for students of Texas A&M University-Commerce so that they will have an opportunity to join this national honor society as well as Phi Eta Sigma.

Beginning in the fall semester of 2006, Dr. Susan Stewart of the Department of Literature and Languages (Susan_Stewart@tamu-commerce.edu) will become faculty adviser of Alpha Lambda Delta.
